About 125 social studies teachers in primary and secondary schools across the island will soon undergo heritage training.

The series of workshops will be held from February 16 to 17, 21 to 22 and 28 to 29 at the Ministry of Education. The seminars will be hosted by the Barbados World Heritage Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and the History Department of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

They will be facilitated by Dr. Tara Inniss, Dr. Henderson Carter and Professor Pedro Welch of the UWI and will culminate with tours to the World Heritage Site.??

An official in the Division of Culture explained that the objectives of the sessions are to sensitise teachers about the outstanding universal value of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, which is Barbados’ first World Heritage Site, as well as prepare them to deliver the heritage module of the social studies programme.

This training forms part of the public awareness campaign of the Barbados World Heritage Committee.

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison was inscribed as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage Site last June in Paris, France. It is believed that the designation will assist in enhancing Barbados’ global image and contribute to the marketing of the tourism and cultural products.
