Government will host a National Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, June 3, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.
This disclosure has come from Minister of Family, Stephen Lashley, who pointed out that the service would be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Governor General Elliott Belgrave and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart are expected to be in attendance.
Speaking at a press briefing today at the Warrens Office Complex to announce plans for the celebration, Mr. Lashley said preparations for the service were at an advanced stage and encouraged members of the public to attend and be seated by 3:30 p.m.
He noted that the Bishop of Barbados, Dr. John Holder, would deliver the sermon, as well as administer the benediction and blessing, while Dean of the St. Michael’s Cathedral, Reverend Frank Marshall, would be the Chief Celebrant and chair of the service.
According to him, a prayer written at the Queen’s direction for the Diamond Jubilee would be said, among others. In addition, he stressed that a wide cross section of the community would be involved in the service, including young people, a National Mass Choir and the Royal Barbados Police Force.
The service is being planned by the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, in association with a clergy sub-committee comprising representatives of the Barbados Christian Council and the Barbados Evangelical Association.
Meanwhile, the celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will continue on Monday, June 4, with a Beacon Lighting Ceremony at the Garrison Savannah, starting at 5:30 p.m.
