The Faces of Violence in Our Society will be in focus this November, as the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit (CJRPU) marks Crime Awareness Month.
The CJRPU will celebrate with a series of activities designed to raise awareness on the different ???faces??? of violence and those it affects.
On Wednesday, November 11, officials at the CJRPU will release the findings of a homicide study at Almond Bay, Hastings, Christ Church, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
On Friday, November 13, the CJRPU will host a panel discussion entitled: The Role of the Church in Reducing Youth Violence, at the Whitepark Wesleyan Holiness Church, White Park Road, St. Michael, at 7:00 p.m.
Panellists will include Principal of the Parkinson Memorial Secondary School, Jeff Broomes; Police Sergeant, Hallam Jemmott, attached to the Juvenile Liaison Scheme of the Royal Barbados Police Force; Sentence Management Officer at Her Majesty???s Prisons Dodds, Lena Weekes; and Deputy Principal of the Government Industrial School, Ronald Brathwaite.
A church service under the theme: A Service of Hope, will be held on Sunday, November 15, at Restoration Ministries, Gunsite Road, Brittons Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The service will include a special prayer session for the Attorney General and all criminal justice personnel and first responders on the island.
Then on Friday, November 20, the CJRPU will host a workshop for the elderly under the theme: Abuse Ignores Age: Violence Against the Elderly, at Almond Bay, Hastings, Christ Church, at 9:00 a.m.
This will be followed by the finals of a debate under the topic: The Responsibility Falls Squarely on the Shoulders of School Officials to Prohibit Violence Among Secondary School Students, on Tuesday, November 24, at the Prince Cave Hall, District ???A??? Police Station, Station Hill, St. Michael, at 9:30 a.m.
On Thursday, November 26, there will be a primary school rally at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 9:00 a.m.??Also on that day, there will be another panel discussion, this time focusing on the Degradation of Women, at the Barbados Workers??? Union headquarters, Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, starting at 7:00 p.m.
Panellists for the discussion include Dr. Tonya Haynes of the Institute of Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies; Patrick ???Salt??? Bellamy of Slam 101.1 FM; President of the Barbados Film and Video Association, Lynette Eastmond; and Editor at the Nation Publishing House, Sanka Price. Tonni Brodder of UN Women Barbados will moderate the discussion.
