This weekend, the Ministry of Tourism, in conjunction with the St. Philip HIV/AIDS Education Group and Constituency Councils of St. Philip, will host Looking Back at Sodom, an HIV and AIDS-focused play, at the Princess Margaret Secondary School, Six Roads, St. Philip.

The theatrical piece, which is free to the public, will be held on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m.?? It uses young, local talent to address issues related to the virus and its implications, and other burning social issues, such as domestic violence and child abuse, all within a Barbadian context.

Dialect, comedy and satire are all employed in the play, which had its debut during Love Safely Week in February.?? The overwhelming response from the audience at that initial showing led to the partnership between the Ministry and the Councils and the decision to take Looking Back at Sodom to a wider audience.

For persons who may believe that the HIV/AIDS theme cannot be presented in a new engaging way, the Ministry of Tourism’s HIV/AIDS Coordinator, Madge Dalrymple, has assured that the play has breathed new life into the issue. ??She said that with HIV/AIDS concerns now a part of our daily lives, it had become crucial to replace complacency with active responsibility.?? Ms. Dalrymple added that the play will get the audience thinking and talking about how the virus affects us all and hopes that it will make everyone take HIV and AIDS, and their consequences, seriously.

Those in attendance are asked to make a monetary or food stuff contribution to the AIDS Food Bank.?? The coordinators advise parental guidance for viewing of the play, as the piece addresses many sensitive issues which may not be suitable for all ages.
