Prime Minister David Thompson

The 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) will get under way next Tuesday, September 16, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.  Barbados will be represented at the meeting by Prime Minister David Thompson and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business, Christopher Sinckler.

The UNGA traditionally features statements by dozens of Heads of State and Government as well as Ministers. Its general debate will run from September 23 to October 1.

On Friday, September 26, Prime Minister Thompson will deliver Barbados’ address to the UNGA. He will be the 10th speaker at the afternoon session which be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Ahead of his address, Prime Minister Thompson will attend a Special Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting slated for Wednesday, September 24, at the Economic and Social Council Chamber, UN Headquarters. The following day is a high level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals at which the Prime Minister will chair the third roundtable on environmental sustainability. He is also scheduled to deliver this country’s address at roundtable two on education and health.

Meanwhile, on Monday, September 22, Minister Sinckler will attend a top meeting on Africa’s development needs. The next day he will join the discussion on “Financing Education to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals”. On Wednesday, September 24, he will attend the Seventh Meeting of the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers, and the following day a meeting between CARICOM and US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.
