The National Disabilities Unit (NDU) is once again giving persons the opportunity to better communicate with the hearing impaired, as they host their Sign Language Programme, which will commence this September.
The 14 week programme, which caters to both adults and children, also aims to facilitate the empowerment of the hearing impaired through integration and inclusion, in all aspects of community living.??
The adult courses will be held at the Irving Wilson School, Pine Plantation Road, St. Michael; the Alexandra School, Queen’s Street, St. Peter; and Princess Margaret Secondary School, Six Roads, St. Philip on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.??
Meanwhile, classes for children will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 at the Irving Wilson School, Lascelles Terrace, the Pine, St. Michael, St. John’s Primary, Glebe, St. John, Reynold Weekes Primary; Four Roads, St. Philip and Hilda Skeene Primary School; Ruby, St. Philp, as well as at the Edna Nicholls Centre, Boscobelle, St. Peter at 3:00 p.m.

The adult Sign Language programme was established in 2001, and the children’s programme came on stream in September 2005. Training is currently available in 39 Primary schools and two secondary schools. sharifa.medford@barbados.gov.bb
