Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Senator Haynesley Benn

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Senator Haynesley Benn will tomorrow, Thursday, November 13, 2008 chair a meeting at his Graeme Hall offices, for persons interested in selling local agricultural produce at government’s proposed weekly outdoor market. This special planning session begins at 4 p.m.

“We have been working assiduously to get this off the ground, and we are close to identifying an appropriate location for the proposed 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. facility,” said Senator Benn, whose Ministry officials will assist him in detailing this “novel approach to agricultural vending in Barbados”.

The proposal is to set aside as market day, a specific day in the week for farmers and non-farmers, stall owners and other vendors, licensed or unlicensed, to bring their produce to a central location and offer it for sale to the public.

Mr. Benn recalled that Prime Minister David Thompson had indicated in his July Budget Speech that marketing local agricultural production was a constant problem.  Thus, he had promised to introduce such a concept to support farmers and simultaneously assist in reducing the cost of living and promoting healthy life styles.
