Activities to mark Barbados??? 50th Anniversary of Independence will continue later this week with a Trident Run and Community Sunset Concert.
Chairman of the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations Coordinating Committee, Senator Maxine McClean, made this disclosure yesterday during a press conference at the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations Secretariat, located in the Old Town Hall Building in Bridgetown.
According to her, the events, which are scheduled to come off this Thursday, January 21, are being organised by the Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, the National Cultural Foundation and the Barbados Olympic Association, and are intended to highlight the contribution of former Prime Minister Errol Barrow to this country.
???In this golden year of Barbados??? Independence it is important that we as Barbadians celebrate the legacy of nationhood that the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow worked tirelessly to establish,??? she said.
Senator McClean explained that participants in the Trident Run will comprise representatives from a number of Barbados??? sporting organisations, who will set out from Independence Square at 3:00 p.m. and take the commemorative Broken Trident to the Glebe playing field in St. George.
She pointed out that the theme for the race was From Legends to Legacy, and would see former athletes such as Jim Wedderburn, Anton Norris and Noel Lynch participating along with children.
???The run is intended to acknowledge a number of places along the route upon which the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow left an indelible mark, whether in his personal, public or professional career.
Among those institutions will be Parliament, Government Headquarters, the Cruising Club, the Hilton Hotel, the Military Cemetery where some of his ashes are buried, the Garrison, Culloden Farm and Ilaro Court,??? she stated.
The Community Sunset Concert is expected to begin at 5:30 p.m. after the runners reach the Glebe pasture, and end at 8:00 p.m. It will feature artistes from various educational institutions across Barbados, who will perform various genres of music.
They include the St. George Secondary School Orchestra, The Alleyne School Band, Barbados Community College – The Men, 1688 Junior Band, Harrison College Pop School Band and the Taitt Hill New Testament Church of God Choir.
