A??new tourism attraction is set to be launched by the Ministry of Tourism.

It is the "Barbados Slave Route Heritage Trail and Tour",?? which will provide tourists and locals with the opportunity to visit a number of sites in communities across Barbados, that speak to the legacy of persons who endured some 200 years of slavery.

Sites that commemorate slave resistance, show places of rest/burial and celebrate the struggle and fulfillment of freedom from enslavement, will be among the key highlights of the four-hour long journey that will commence at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society (BMHS). These places are The Cage in Bridgetown; Gun Hill and Sweet Vale 9formerly of Sweet bottom) in St. George and Newton Slave Burial Ground and Bourne’s Land in Christ Church.

The development of this new tourism attraction is being undertaken by the BHMS, which has been contracted by the Ministry of Tourism. Currently in its pilot phase, the Barbados Slave Route Heritage Trail and Tour is expected to be officially launched in December.

To sensitise communities and the public at large to this new attraction, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the BMHS, will host a series of town hall meetings at venues across the island.

The first town hall meeting will be held on Thursday, July 22, in Sweet Vale, St. George at the Sweet Lime Bar. The following Thursday, July 29, the second one will take place at the St. Christopher’s Resource Centre, Bourne’s Land, Christ Church.

On Thursday, August 5, the Lodge Road Wesleyan Holiness Church will be the venue for the third town hall meeting, while on Monday, August 9, there will be a meeting for Gun Hill and the surrounding communities at the Newbury Nazarene Church.?? All meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and the Museum will be on hand to answer queries from the community.

Residents in the four districts are invited to attend the sessions and learn more about the upcoming Barbados Slave Route Heritage Trail and Tour.

For further information on the town hall meetings, members of the public may contact Tourism Development Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Selma Thompson, at 430-7521. jgill@barbados.gov.bb
