The public is reminded that the Town and Country Planning Development Office has been renamed the Planning and Development Department. The renaming followed the proclamation of the Planning and Development Act, 2019, on December 7, 2021.

Additionally, the post of Chief Town Planner has been replaced with that of Director of Planning and Development, and there is also a Planning and Development Board.

The Board handles applications for planning permission, except those referred to the Minister responsible for planning and development, thus removing the task from the one public officer previously assigned.  It has delegated certain decision making to the Director as is provided for in the legislation.

According to a statement from the department, the Planning and Development Act, 2019, along with the Planning and Development (General Development) Order, 2021, and the Planning and Development, Environmental Impact Regulations, 2021 now form the legislative foundation of the planning and development system in Barbados.

Going forward, the public can expect additional regulations as the legal framework is expanded to ensure that the suite of legislation is fit for purpose.
