On Friday, June 1, between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m., there will be an installation ceremony for a new Governor General of Barbados at Parliament buildings.
Consequently, the Royal Barbados Police Force has indicated that during this period a number of roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic, except vehicles used to transport invited guests to the ceremony.
These are: Trafalgar Street from its junction with High Street to its junction with Marhill Street; Broad Street from its junction with Prince William Henry Street to its junction with High Street; National Heroes Square; the Charles Duncan O’ Neal Bridge; and the area of the Wharf to the south of the Fountain Gardens.
In addition, no one will be allowed to park or allowed to have a vehicle remain stationary on any of the following roads, except for the purpose of picking up or setting down passengers: St. Michael’s Row, Lower Roebuck Street, Bridge Street, Magazine Lane, Palmetto Street, Ricketts Street, Marhill Street, High Street, and Spry Street.
Furthermore, Bay Street from its junction with Probyn Street to its Junction with Jemmotts Lane Road will be one-way and traffic will flow in a southern direction. Motorists travelling along Lower Bay Street towards The City must turn right at its junction with Jemmotts Lane Road.
Drivers of vehicles bearing the label marked ???C‘ in red on a white background must approach Parliament Buildings by way of Marhill Street and High Street and must park in the area of Marhill Street, Palmetto Street, Palmetto Square and Ricketts Street, or any other areas as directed by a member of the Royal Barbados Police Force in uniform and must enter the Parliament Buildings Yard via the north gate.
In addition, drivers of vehicles bearing the label marked ???BTI‘ in black on a yellow background will have to park at the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. car park on Lower Bay Street, or any other areas as directed by a police officer in uniform.
Drivers of vehicles bearing the label marked ???EPC‘ in black on a light blue back ground should park within the car parks of the Elsie Payne Complex and be shuttled by bus to the northern entrance of Parliament Buildings. All other drivers conveying people to the ceremony must approach the area it via St. Michael’s Row or Broad Street, and park as directed by a police officer in uniform.
Any person who contravenes these rules or fails to comply with any order given by a member of the Royal Barbados Police Force in uniform will be guilty of an offence and, therefore, liable on summary conviction to a fine of $500, or to imprisonment for a term of six months.
However, these rules do not apply to vehicles used by members of the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Barbados Defence Force or to any emergency vehicle.
