Global resource company and offshore licensee BHP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, is inviting suitably qualified Barbadians to apply for positions as Protected Species Observer-Trainees, for the upcoming seismic survey offshore Barbados in September.
Prospective candidates must have a Bachelor of Science degree or be a final year undergraduate student in Marine Science and/or Wildlife. Persons will be contracted (or employed) as third party contractors uninterruptedly for four to six weeks, from September to October.
The roles expected to be performed include:
- Ensuring that no marine species are observed within a specified area before seismic activity begins and take positive action to avoid any interface between seismic vessels and mammals and sea-turtles
- Assisting the crew and seismic survey team in logging; monitoring; identifying and reporting the sightings of cetaceans or other protected marine species
- Communicating immediately with the recording room – any animal sighting or acoustic detection that requires a shutdown
- Overseeing the Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) System which involves continuous monitoring during hours of darkness and low visibility
- Providing operator advice regarding compliance with the Joint National Conservation Committee guidelines
- Preparing reports detailing observations/acoustic detections of marine fauna
Additionally, candidates must have good communication skills and be able to learn and grasp new concepts easily. Completion of safety and other relevant courses, along with previous use of PAM equipment and software, would be an asset.
