More than 30 participants are now in a better position to understand how to use pesticides safely, following a workshop hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Fisheries and Water Resources Management.

The two-day workshop, which was held recently at the Ministry’s Graeme Hall, Christ Church location, was one of the activities put on by the Ministry as part of World Food Day activities and Pesticides Awareness Week.

The workshop facilitators were Jose Gomez and Eduardo Hildalgo from Costa Rico, who are also affiliated with the Centre for Agricultural Biosciences International.

During the session, the participants from the Ministry and the private sector were exposed to topics such as Pesticide Safety, Calculating the Rates, Selection of the Appropriate Pesticide Nozzles, Calibration of Spray Equipment and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

According to Senior Agricultural Officer with responsibility for plant protection, Michael James, the knowledge gained from the session will be used by participants to educate agriculturalists on the correct use of pesticides, and the importance of wearing protective gear when spraying crops.
