Training will begin soon for members of the public who want to serve as hotline counsellors.

It will be held every other Saturday from October 2, in the Training Room of the Warrens Office Complex and run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of the West Indies, Karen Ring, will conduct the sessions. The topics to be examined include basic crisis intervention and counselling skills; and handling areas of concern in: relationship issues, domestic violence, bereavement and suicide.

Those interested in participating should call Programme Officer at the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Nalita Gajadhar, at 310-2105; or e-mail barbadosbpw@gmail.com. Having received this training, the volunteers will be able to serve on any of the existing hotlines, for example, the Crisis Centre.

BPW Barbados (Business and Professional Women’s Club) is organising the training, which can also act as a refresher course for those already instructed in counselling. BPW is one of the Bureau’s main partners in the area of domestic violence, and for the past 10 years, it has run the island’s only shelter for abused women, with support from the Government of Barbados.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
