There are a number of training opportunities open to young Barbadians in China, especially those who want to pursue post graduate training.

Prime Minister David Thompson made this known today while reflecting on talks he had with the Government of the People’s Republic of China and faculty members of the Chinese Foreign Affairs University earlier this week,

He said he had learnt that only a few Barbadian students had taken up offers to study in China. “Included in that small number,” he disclosed, “is a young lady who hails from my constituency. I am happy to report too, that she did very well; she has graduated and is now working legally in China. In fact, I did make contact with her and we met and had discussions over here (China).”

Mr. Thompson said it appeared that some persons were reluctant to come to China to study because of the long distance and the language. But, I was reliably informed by no less a person than the Vice President of the China Foreign Affairs University, Mr. Qin Yaqing, that post-graduate studies at his university are conducted in English. So, language should not be seen as a deterrent at the post-graduate level,” he reckoned.

He said: “with China rapidly becoming an economic world power and with globalisation, I am certain there will be business opportunities opening over time. Some of us may have to look beyond our domestic space to find our particular niche,” he noted.

Barbados will be establishing an Embassy in China later this year. Already, six CARICOM countries have diplomatic missions in China; they are: Grenada, the Bahamas, Dominica, Guyana, Suriname, and Jamaica. (PG/BGIS)
