Approximately 16 Child Care Board attendants who work with children in residential care will soon receive valuable training to enhance their skills.

A four-day Residential Parenting Workshop entitled Parenting Towards Resilience and Success will be held on May 10, 17, 24 and 31 at the Sterling Children’s Home, St. Philip.

Participants will examine four modules, namely, Mirror, Mirror – We Look at Ourselves; Understanding the Developing Trends and Changes in Residential Care; Understanding Child Development and Getting the Outcomes We Want: Relevant Parenting Strategies.

The sessions will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and be facilitated by Psychologist, Mabel Ekiyor; Social Worker, Leroy Gibbs; Speech and Language Pathologist, Tracey Norman Rice; and Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Sadie Goddard-Durant.

Giving the rationale for the workshop, an official at the Board said there was a shift in the attitude and behaviours of some children coming into care. "These challenging behaviours necessitate continuous training for the staff who work with these children, so as to assist in providing the kind of care they need to make a difference in their lives," the spokesperson noted.

This year’s Child Month activities are being celebrated under the theme Empower our Families: Save our Children.
