Winners in the Tsunami Ready Art Competition for Barbados were announced and awarded their prizes today.
Acting Programme Officer at the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), Danielle Howell, announced the top three winners in the Barbados competition.
First place went to Kya Knight of the Deighton Griffith Secondary School, who was awarded one Lenovo laptop. Second and third place went to Lodge School students Alexis Belgrave and Reann Dottin, respectively. Alexis was awarded one pair of Beats by Dre headphones, and Reann, one fully loaded art supply kit.
DEM’s Director, Kerry Hinds, stated: “Today, we recognise the Art Competition winners for reflecting on the tsunami and other coastal hazards, and representing their perspectives in artistic impressions.
“The utilisation of various media to encourage learning is an important aspect of our public education and awareness programme at the Department of Emergency Management, thus we were excited and pleased to be a part of this fun learning activity.”
The Tsunami Ready Art Competition was part of the EU funded “Strengthening Capacities for Early Warning Response for Tsunamis and Other Coastal Hazards in the Caribbean” Project, and as an activity contributing to the recognition of World Tsunami Awareness Day 2019.
It was opened to youth aged 14 to 16 in participating countries – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominican Republic, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.
