A promise has been made to build on the existing bilateral relationship between Barbados and Turkey and to explore additional areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Turkey???s Ambassador to Barbados, Sule Oztunc, gave this undertaking recently, when she paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean.

Areas discussed by the two officials during the call included: tourism, the benefits of concluding a double taxation agreement (DTA) between the two countries, developmental assistance for projects and establishing an honorary consulate in Turkey.

Ambassador Oztunc said the Honorary Consul of Barbados to Turkey would ???help to foster stronger relations between the two countries???.
She also reminded Senator McClean of that country???s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2015-2016.

In turn, the Foreign Minister acknowledged previous discussions on a DTA and pointed out that its conclusion was critical to future investment opportunities that may arise for both countries. Barbados and Turkey established diplomatic ties in September 1972.
