Barbados has been asked to support Turkey???s candidature for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2015-2016.

This request came recently from Her Excellency Mrs. Ebru G??kdenizler, the Special Envoy of Turkey???s Prime Minister, as she paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart at Government Headquarters, and delivered a letter from her Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Mrs. G??kdenizler, who is on a mission to gather support for her country???s candidature, said Turkey had served on the Security Council during the period 2009-2010 and it had received Barbados??? support. ???We did a very good job on the Security Council???and we want your valuable assistance as we did in the past. We hope we can serve and be an asset for global peace,??? she stated.

Prime Minister Stuart said that Turkey was doing much to contribute to world peace and development, and promised that Barbados would consult with its CARICOM partners regarding Turkey???s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council. He pointed out that, ordinarily, CARICOM Member States try, as far as possible, to act collaboratively on matters of Foreign Policy.

Barbados??? diplomatic relationship with Turkey dates back to 1972 and the Prime Minister said it was one this country values highly, and wants to deepen.

Mrs. G??kdenizler disclosed that Turkey???s Ambassador to Barbados would be visiting soon to present her credentials and to hold discussions with officials on how to strengthen relations between the two countries.
