Sponsors and finalists of the inaugural WorldSkills Barbados Competition 2012 will be treated to a cocktail reception this Saturday, January 7.

The event, which is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., will take place at the Crane Resort, Crane, St. Philip.

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo and Chairman of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, Dr. Hensley Sobers, will deliver remarks at the event.??

The Labour Minister had previously pointed out that the inaugural WorldSkills Barbados Competition 2012 would be a part of this country’s efforts to ensure that the Barbadian workforce had the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to compete at the global level.

Organised by the TVET Council, WorldSkills Barbados is based on the WorldSkills International Competition, a global "Skills Olympics" that is held biannually in one of its 55 member countries.

The WorldSkills Barbados Competition 2012 provides young students, between the ages of 16 – 25, who are enrolled in technical and vocational education and training, with the opportunity to compete and demonstrate their skills excellence.

Finalists in this year’s contest will represent the Barbados Community College (BCC), the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) and the Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB).?? They will compete in the areas of Fashion Technology, Beauty Therapy, Automotive Technology, Hair Dressing and Culinary Arts.??

The three-day WorldSkills Barbados Competition 2012 will take place from March 7 to 9.??
