The findings and recommendations of the Barbados Statistical Service???s (BSS) Modernisation Project will be discussed next week, when 70 senior government officials, producers and users of statistics gather for a two-day workshop.

It will be held on Tuesday, October 1, and Wednesday, October 2, at the PomMarine Hotel, and the participants will also examine the next steps in the project???s implementation. The seminar is being hosted by the Barbados Statistical Service, in collaboration with the consulting firm Oxford Policy Management Limited.

This Project was initiated on December 11, 2008, to strengthen the ability of the BSS to provide relevant, timely and quality economic and social statistics, as well as to establish its leadership in this area within the public sector.

It is partly funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Government of Barbados. The project???s objectives include the examination of a strengthened legal framework to enable the BSS to perform its duties more effectively and the establishment of a statistics network, which includes governmental agencies, to produce relevant public data.

The services of the consultancy firm Oxford Policy Management Limited were procured to make recommendations on how to enhance the capacity of the BSS and the wider National Statistical System to respond to the information needs of Government, the private sector and the public.
