Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley??????

Two Barbadians and their families are now proud to be one step closer to owning their own home, thanks to Government???s Rent-to-Own pilot programme.

Sadiq Hill and Adrian Sealy were presented with the keys to their two-bedroom duplexes, located at Airlie Heights, Cave Hill, St Michael, by Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley and Acting General Manager of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), Lanette Napoleon-Young, at last Tuesday???s launch ceremony.

In an interview following the launch, 29-year-old Sadiq, said he was overjoyed at the chance to eventually have his own home and lauded the programme as a ???good idea.????? ???It would give persons who do not work for a high salary the chance to at least [pay for] a home out of their salary,??? he said.

The Rent-to-Own programme allows persons to make monthly payments, equal to 30 per cent of income as rent, for a period of seven years, with the option to purchase after that period.?? It enables persons who would not otherwise qualify for assistance at market rates, to become homeowners.

Adrian Sealy, his girlfriend and two daughters are relieved to be moving into their new home. Stating he had rented rooms before, which, in his opinion, were unsuitable, Mr. Sealy said: ???I feel like a million dollars because I have been searching for a home [for] so long.?? Now I get my opportunity and the chance to actually own a house. This takes a lot of pressure off my back… I???ll be moving in this weekend.???

Rent-to-Own is part of the Housing Every last Person programme introduced by the NHC to create decent, affordable and innovative housing solutions for person mainly in the lower income bracket.
