African Awareness Month starts Sunday, February 1.

During the month, a number of schools across the island will be staging events to commemorate the period, known elsewhere as Black History Month.

The George Lamming Primary School at Flint Hall, St. Michael, will open its month of activities on Monday, February 2, at 9:00 a.m., under the theme: Africa: The Cradle of Civilisation.

Lecturer in History at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Rodney Worrell, will speak on this theme when he delivers a lecture to students, teachers and parents at the start of the celebrations.

Students, along with teachers and parents, will wear African garb and recall their heritage through dance, rhythm poetry and song. The school???s activities will continue until Thursday, February 26.

St. Boniface Nursery School in Sion Hill, St. James, will also start activities on Monday, February 2. The tiny tots, dressed in African garb, will be given lessons throughout the day on Africa.

All About Africa, the theme for the month, will be portrayed from 9:00 a.m., through a photo gallery of people, animals, places, flags, jewellery, hair styles and a display of artefacts and clothing.
