The Careenage??in Bridgetown (FP)

The Urban Development Commission (UDC) has embarked on a public/private sector initiative to clean-up the waters of the Careenage and promote economic and social activity in Bridgetown.

Under the theme: Green Environments, Urban Economics, a major plank of this venture will see scores of Barbadians cruising from the Chamberlain Bridge east and west along the Careenage this Friday, July 13, starting at 6:00 p.m.??

The free ???love boat’ or ???gondola-type’ boat ride will not only revitalise the City after hours, but as a novel attraction, is expected to stimulate economic activities for small businesses to operate stalls during the love boat ride.

Cognisant of the need to preserve the environment, the staff of the UDC will be using kayaks and other vessels to assist them with the removal of debris from the Careenage from 3:45 p.m. that afternoon.

During the clean-up, staff and other participants will be distributing flyers and information throughout Bridgetown on the activity and promoting environmental awareness. In addition, a special treat for shoppers and commuters will be a Town Crier in traditional dress announcing the activity. The flyer may be used to obtain a boarding pass for the love boat rides in the evening and also to gain a 20 per cent discount for the following day during the Pan in the City event.??
