Barbados has been chosen by UNICEF for the purpose of a case study on social and emotional learning.
As a result, two consultants from Northampton University in the United Kingdom (UK), Chris Gittens and Philip Garner, will be on the island from March 9 to 13 meeting with officials in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, principals, teachers and students from select schools.
On Monday, March 9, the team from the UK will meet with Ministry officials, including the Acting Chief Education Officer, Karen Best.??From Tuesday, March 10, until Thursday, March 12, they will visit several schools, as well as community support groups.
These include: Erdiston Special Unit, Roland Edwards Primary, Eagle Hall Primary, Darryl Jordan Secondary, and The Edna Nicholls Centre. They will also visit the National Council on Substance Abuse, the Barbados Family Planning Association, PAREDOS, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Associations. The meeting will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The two consultants will on Wednesday, March 11, engage principals of both public and private secondary schools in a discussion on Violence Reduction in Schools. This will be held at the Accra Beach Hotel, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Senior School Attendance Officer, John Hollingsworth will chair the session.
