The Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), in collaboration with the Barbados chapter of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network, will host a series of underwater cleanups to mark the country’s 50th anniversary of Independence.

The first cleanup is slated for Saturday, June 11, at 7:00 a.m. However, scuba divers and other interested persons are asked to meet at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve, Holetown, St. James, from 6:30 a.m.

They should also contact Sadie-Ann Sisnett or Richard Suckoo at the CZMU by Wednesday, June 8, to confirm participation in the underwater cleanup.

The officers may be reached by emailing ssisnett@coastal.gov.bb, or rsuckoo@coastal.gov.bb, respectively, or calling 622-1610. In addition, there will also be a storytelling session for children after the dive at 9:30 a.m., and an appearance by Zana the mascot.

The cleanup activities form part of a larger project called CleanBim, which brings together agencies, companies and non-governmental organisations to engage the public, create awareness and encourage residents to keep Barbados’ environment clean. They will take place on the second Saturday of each month and will run until September.
