The rate of unemployment for the April to June 2015 quarter stood at 11.9 per cent, with the unemployment rate among males being 12.8 per cent and 11.1 per cent among females.

This is according to statistics derived from the Barbados Statistical Service???s Continuous Household Labour Force Survey. In the second quarter for 2015, the number of persons employed totalled 126,200; of whom 62,500 were males and 63,700 were females.

The total number of unemployed persons stood at 17,100 – 9,200 males and 7,900 females; while the labour force stood at 143,300. The number of persons not actively looking for work, hence excluded from the labour force, was 79,000 persons. The Labour Force participation rate stood at 64.4 per cent, with participation among males at 67.5 per cent and 61.7 per cent among females.

During the second quarter, the Wholesale & Retail Trade Sector generated jobs for the largest number of persons, employing 19,800 persons; while 15,200 persons found work in the Accommodation & Food Services Sector. The Construction, Mining & Quarrying Sector generated employment for 11,600 persons, while 9,500 worked in the Manufacturing Sector. Employment in the Public Administration & Defence Sector reached 9,300 persons.

The Education Sector and the Other Groups Sector, which includes the Information and Communications, Activities of Extraterritorial Organisations & Bodies, Real Estate & Arts, Entertainment and Recreation industries, generated employment for 7,000 and 7,200 persons, respectively. The Administrative & Support Service Sector generated employment for 6,600 persons.

The Transportation & Storage Sector and the Finance & Insurance Sector generated employment for 6,200 persons and 5,500, persons, respectively. Employment in the Human Health & Social Work Sector stood at 7,400 persons. The employment generated in the Professional, Scientific & Technical Services Sector was 4,400 persons.

During the period under review, employment recorded in the Other Services Sector stood at 4,100 persons; while employment levels in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing Sector stood at 3,800 persons. Employment in the Activities of Householders as Employers Sector reached 5,900 persons. The Electric, Gas, Steam, Water & Air Conditioning Supply Sector generated jobs for 2,800 persons
