Statistics derived from the Continuous Household Labour Force Survey indicated that the rate of unemployment for the July to September quarter of 2014 stood at 12.9 per cent.

According to the Economic Affairs Division, unemployment among males stood at 11.5 per cent and at 14.3 per cent among females.

In the review period, the number of persons employed totalled 123,500; of whom 63,500 were males and 60,100 were females.

The number of unemployed persons stood at 18,300 – 8,300 males and 10,000 females.??In total, the number of persons in the labour force stood at 141,900; while those not actively looking for work, hence excluded from the labour force, was 80,600 persons. The labour force??participation rate stood at 63.7 per cent, with participation among males at 67.5 per cent and 60.3 per cent among females.

In the third quarter of 2014, the Wholesale & Retail Trade sector generated jobs for the largest number of persons, employing 21,700 persons, while 14,000 were employed in the Accommodation & Food Services sector.

The Construction, Mining & Quarrying sector generated employment for 13,000 persons and the Manufacturing sector created work for 10,200 persons. Employment in the Public Administration & Defence sector reached 8,400 persons, while the Administrative & Support Service sector reached 7,300 persons.

The Other Groups sector, which includes Information and Communications, Activities of Extraterritorial Organisations & Bodies, Real Estate & Arts, Entertainment and Recreation, employed 6,800 persons ,while 6,400 worked in the Education sector.

The Human Health & Social Work sector and Transportation and Storage sectors each generated employment for 6,100 persons. Employment in the Finance & Insurance sector stood at 4,800 persons, while employment in the Professional, Scientific & Technical Services sector stood at 4,600 persons. Four thousand five hundred persons worked in the Activities of Households as Employers sector.

During the review period, employment recorded in the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector stood at 4,100, while employment levels in the Other Services sector stood at 3,500. The Electric, Gas, Steam, Water & Air Conditioning Supply sector generated jobs for 2,000 persons.
