Statistics derived from the Continuous Household Labour Force Survey indicated that the rate of unemployment for the second quarter (April to June) of 2013 stood at 10.5 per cent.

The unemployment rate among males stood at 9.4 per cent and 11.7 per cent among females.??In the review period, the number of persons employed totalled 127,600, of whom 66,300 were males and 61,400 were females. The total number of unemployed persons stood at 15,000, made up of 6,900 males and 8,200 females. In total, the number of persons in the labour force stood at 142,700, consisting of 73,100 males and 69,500 females.

The number of persons not actively looking for work, hence excluded from the labour force was 71,500 persons – 28,100 males and 43,300 females. The Labour Force participation rate stood at 66.6 per cent – 72.2 per cent among males and 61.6 per cent among females.

Meanwhile, in the second quarter of 2013, the sector generating the highest number of jobs was the Wholesale and Retail Trade which employed 21,700 persons, while the Public Administration and Defence sector employed 12,600 persons. The Construction, Mining and Quarrying sector generated employment for 12,400 persons, while the Accommodation and Food Services sector generated employment for 11,800 persons.

Employment in the Manufacturing sector reached 9,700 persons, while employment levels in Education reached 7,800 persons. The Administrative & Support Service sector and the Transportation & Storage sector employed 7,200 persons and 6,800 persons, respectively.??

The Human Health & Social Work sector generated employment for 6,100 persons and the Other Groups (Information & Communication, Activities of Extraterritorial Organizations & Bodies, Real Estate & Arts, Entertainment & Recreation) sector provided employment for 5,700 persons. Employment in the Finance & Insurance sector stood at 5,600 persons, while employment in the Activities of Households as Employers stood at 5,400 persons.

The employment generated in the Other Services sector was 4,500 persons. During the review period, employment recorded in the Professional, Scientific & Technical Services sector stood at 4,300 persons, while employment levels in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing totalled 3,200 persons. The Electric, Gas, Steam, Water & Air Conditioning Supply sector generated jobs for 2,700 persons.??
