Statistics from the Continuous Household Labour Force Survey for the Quarter January to March 2013, compiled by the Research and Planning Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, have been released.

Unemployment for the first quarter of the year stood at 11.5 per cent, with the rate at 11.8 per cent for males and 11.1 per cent for females. The total number of unemployed persons stood at 16,400 ??? 8,600 males and 7,700 females.

Employed persons numbered 126,300, of whom 64,200 were males and 62,000 were females. In total, the number of persons in the labour force stood at 142,600, represented by 72,900 males and 69,800 females. The number of persons not actively looking for work and thus excluded from the labour force was 71,500 persons, comprising 28,400 males and 43,100 females. The labour force participation rate stood at 66.6 per cent, with 72.0 per cent for males and 61.8 per cent for females.

During the first quarter, the Wholesale and Retail trade sector generated jobs for the largest number of persons, employing 20,100 persons; while the Accommodation and Food services employed 13,700 persons. The Construction, Mining and Quarrying sector generated employment for 12,100 persons; Public Administration and Defence generated employment for 10,200 persons; and in the Manufacturing sector employment reached 8,200; while 7,700 persons were employed in Education.

The other sectors were: Transportation and Storage generating employment for 6,400 persons; Human Health and Social Work ??? 6,300 persons; Finance and Insurance sector ??? 6,000 persons; Activities of Households as Employers ??? 5,000 persons; and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services sectors generated employment for 4,900 persons.

The review period also saw 4,800 persons employed in the Other Services sector; while 3,300 persons were employed in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, and the Electric, Gas, Steam, Water and Air Conditioning Supply sector generated jobs for 3,200.
