Barbadian teenagers and pre-teens will have an opportunity to showcase their creativity for a good cause, with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme’s (CEP) Wider Caribbean Land Based Sources (LBS) Protocol Collage Competition.

The competition, which will have its national launch this Friday, April 1, will be facilitated by the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Ministry of Environment. ??A Future that is Pollution Free – Join Hands to Protect our Caribbean Sea, will be the guiding theme for children ages 12 to 18, who will be allowed to participate through their schools, environmental clubs, faith based, organisations, and community and youth groups, in constructing collages to illustrate how the coastline and marine environment could be protected from land-based sources of pollution.??

Collage entries should be no larger than 18 inches by 24 inches and may feature photos, sketches, paintings and other materials.?? No text is allowed in the collages and inclusion of such will lead to disqualification.?? Pieces shown or submitted elsewhere will not be accepted.?? The full name and contact details of the organisation and a list of the names of the participants must be placed on the back of the collages and only originals (hard copies) of collages should be submitted.??

All pieces should be delivered to the UNEP-CEP country representatives for national judging no later than Thursday, June 30, 2011, with winners to be announced in September, 2011.

Winners will be awarded at both the national and regional levels, with the latter to be chosen from among the first prize country winners.?? Regional first, second and third place winners will be given cash prizes of US$1,000, US$750 and US$500, respectively. National winners will also receive prizes from their respective countries.

A representative from the winning organisation at the regional level will attend the official awards at the UNEP-CEP offices in Kingston, Jamaica, and the collage will be converted into a portable banner, incorporated into UNEP-CEP’s educational materials on the LBS Protocol and used in future promotional campaigns.?? National winners will also continue to participate in the promotion of pollution prevention activities in the wider Caribbean region.????????

The competition was created as a means of celebrating the LBS protocol becoming international law, and thereby creating legislation which requires countries in the region to protect the Caribbean Sea.?? The protocol seeks to control harmful activity by various means, such as limiting domestic water discharges and addressing agricultural runoff.??

It Protocol is one of three Protocols of the Cartagena Convention; the only regional, legally-binding environmental agreement for the protection and development of the wider Caribbean region.??

Additional information on the competition may be obtained by contacting CYEN National Coordinator, Asha Jones, at 248-3535 or 437-6055/66.??
