The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) /Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2011 is now up for grabs.
??Professional and non-governmental organisations working in the field of Journalism and Freedom of Expression in Barbados may nominate candidates for the prize.?? It aims "to honour a person, organisation or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if it involved "risk."
The award was created in honour of Guillermo Cano, the Columbian journalist who was assassinated in 1986 in the exercise of his profession. It is supported by the Guillermo Cano Foundation, the Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation and JP/Politiken Newspapers Ltd. (Denmark).
An annual prize, it consists of a medal and monetary award.??
Applications for this award should be submitted to the Barbados National Commission (BNC) for UNESCO, Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St Michael, by December 31. Entries must be accompanied by a written explanation of why applicants or organisatons were chosen and must be sent in English to this address.
The Commission will accept no late submissions.
