The public will get an updated account of two research programmes, currently being conducted on learning disabilities and special education in Barbados.

This will happen next week when the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development jointly hosts a press conference with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Monday, February 7. The briefing will take place in the Ministry’s Conference Room, Elsie Payne Complex, at 10:00 a.m.

The research projects are examining Learning Disabilities in Primary Schools in Barbados and the Evaluation of the Quality of the Learning Environment and Teaching Methodologies at Schools Providing Special Education. The former is being conducted by Drakes Psychological Consultancy, while the latter is under the aegis of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Consulting.

Acting Chief Education Officer, Laurie King, will chair the press conference, that will include Deputy Chief Education Officer (Ag), Joy Gittens; Education Officers (Special Education) Kaye Sargeant and Cheryl Sargeant-Speede; and UNICEF’s Representative for the Eastern Caribbean, Tom Olsen.

Psychologist, Beverly Drakes, of Drakes Psychological Consultancy and representative of UWI Consulting and Lecturer in Special Education, Stacy Blackman, will provide reports on the respective research programmes.????
