Prime Minister, David Thompson, and the US Attorney General, Eric Holder, at Ilaro Court last evening??

Barbados and the United States have pledged to cooperate in the areas of crime prevention and security matters, as well as in international financial services. These were two of the issues discussed today at a bilateral meeting between the two countries.

The bilateral talks were held at the Crane Hotel, St. Philip, and the Barbados delegation was led by Prime Minister, David Thompson; while the US side was headed by its Attorney General, Eric Holder, Jr.

Also participating in the talks were the Attorney General of Barbados, Freundel Stuart; Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator, Maxine McClean and Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley.????

During the deliberations on crime and security matters, issues related to border security, drug interdiction, and money laundering were the main focus of attention.

Pending US legislation on tax havens and a treaty-based regime in Barbados were the major topics in the international financial services segment of the discussions.

Administration of justice matters also formed part of the dialogue, as issues pertaining to the rehabilitation of offenders, sentencing alternatives, and case reporting were highlighted

Relations with Cuba were also discussed.

At the end of the talks, Attorney General Holder said: ???The United States enjoys special ties with Barbados and looks forward to finding the best ways of addressing issues of mutual concern.???

Commenting on the discussions, Prime Minister Thompson said: ???Barbados views its relationship with the United States as an especially important one, characterised by high levels of mutual respect.???
