United States Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, is now in Barbados on a two-day visit.

He was met on arrival at the Grantley Adams International Airport this evening by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, US Charge D’Affaires Dr.Brent Hardt, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and Security Gilbert Greaves and Chief of Protocol, Hughland Allman.

While in Barbados, Mr.Gates will meet privately with Barbados’ Prime Minister David Thompson, and hold formal talks with Eastern Caribbean leaders and senior national security officials on matters pertaining to the security challenges facing the sub-region and how the United States can work with the Regional Security System to strengthen the region’s capacity to handle these threats.

The US Secretary of Defense will also make a cultural visit to George Washington House.

This will be followed by a press conference at the Hilton Barbados at 12:10 p.m.

The Defense Secretary is scheduled to leave the island tomorrow.
