The Barbados Defence Force’s efforts to protect the land and sea coastlines from illegal activity received a boost today with the donation of command control and communication equipment from the United States Government.

A?? Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed today at Government Headquarters between Government’s Permanent Secretary, Defence and Security, Edison Alleyne, and the Charge d’ Affair??s at the Embassy of the United States, Christopher Sandrolini.??

Mr. Alleyne said: "The security and stability of Barbados is one of the main pillars of our development, as we promote our tourism product to the international community.?? So, it is in our national interest that we continue to provide a secure environment for our citizens and tourists to live, work and play," he affirmed.

Mr. Alleyne thanked the US Government for its continued support to Barbados by partnering in the fight to achieve peace and stability throughout the region.

In turn, Mr. Sandrolini said the US was pleased to provide the maritime package, which would facilitate communication between land, sea and air forces of Barbados and the Regional Security Systems.??

"This is an important step to ensure that collectively all of the forces of the region are able to combine their efforts to coordinate with each other, to keep the seas safe by combating drug smuggling, narcotics trafficking and other kinds of contraband activities.

"So, it is a step in the direction that we are all jointly taking and we are happy to work with Barbados on that," he underlined.
