History will be created in Barbados when the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) grants institutional accreditation status to one of the island???s tertiary educational providers – the University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC).

The Open Campus will receive this award, the first of its kind on the island, next Monday, July 8 at 10.00 a.m. at the Council???s Headquarters at NO 123 A, ???Plaza Centrale???, Roebuck Street, St. Michael.

The Certificate of Accreditation will be presented to Principal of the Open Campus, Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald by Chairman of the BAC, Yvonne Walkes. Both women will deliver remarks at the event.

Accreditation seeks to assure quality educational provision and creates the impetus for relevancy and currency of faculty, programmes and courses of study to best serve students. When a post secondary/tertiary educational provider is granted accreditation status with the Council, this signals its commitment to quality performance and accountability to students, society and the overall educational environment.

Providers that achieve accredited status may enjoy significant local and international benefits, such as increased student enrolment and eligibility for funding by local and foreign investors and agencies.

???More importantly, accreditation status provides that ???competitive edge??? needed in this fierce global educational marketplace,??? an official statement from BAC said.
