With Christmas and Independence celebrations around the corner, vendors, entrepreneurs and Barbadians alike are being urged to come out and support the Market Day being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at Probyn Street in the City.

Manager of Markets, Henderson Greaves, says the time of year is optimum for this type of activity and it is hoped that the initiative, which was borne out of requests by vendors, will bear fruit.  “We need the support of vendors to come out and ply their trade, especially with the Christmas holidays and Independence coming up, and in light of the fact that the Ministry has acceded to their wishes. We also hope that patrons will take the opportunity to come out and make their purchases,” he said.

Mr. Greaves noted that provision has been made for a total of 100 vendors and small business persons to operate from the site of the old Minibus stand with or without licences. He underlined, however, that food vendors would still need the requisite health certification from the Ministry of Health. He also urged operators of food stalls to travel with at least five gallons of water for the rinsing of hands.

Market Day will be held at Probyn Street on Fridays and Saturdays from 6: 00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day, and in instances where more than 100 vendors respond, provision has been made to host the additional persons at an alternative location on the western side of Queen’s Park.
