Barbadians from all walks of life filed reverently past the mahogany casket bearing the body of the former President of the Senate, Sir Branford Taitt, as he lay reposed at the George Street Auditorium.

As the strains of gospel music filled the auditorium, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart headed a list of mourners that also included current and former parliamentarians, cabinet ministers and ordinary Barbadians, who silently paid their respects to one of this island’s most distinguished sons of the soil.

The Prime Minister, who also viewed the body with Sir Branford’s widow Lady Taitt and his children, Sharonne Taitt-Primus, Monique and Branford Junior, described his fallen comrade’s passing as a "watershed in Barbadian political life and the life of the Democratic Labour Party".

"As Prime Minister I want to place on record my gratitude to Branford Mayhew Taitt, whom it was my privilege to recommend for elevation to the status of Knight of St. Andrew and I think it was an honour richly deserved.?? I am very pleased to have known Branford Taitt, to have worked in this organisation with him for as long as we have worked together," Mr. Stuart added.

He further stated: "Another dimension of our relationship is that we were in the Law Faculty of the University of the West Indies as students and graduated in the same year. So, I have known him in many incarnations and manifestations, but however I have known him, his greatness always shone through."

An official funeral will be held for Sir Branford tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, at the Wildey Gymnasium, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
