The new Violet Gittens Centre at the Nightengale Complex in Black Rock, St. Michael, will be officially opened tomorrow, Saturday, January 12.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will deliver the feature address during the official ceremony, while Chairman of the Child Care Board (CCB), Maureen Graham, will welcome those in attendance. Member of Parliament for St. Michael West Central, James Paul and one of the Directors of the Barbados Children’s Trust, Yvonne Brewer, will give remarks.

The new purpose-built facility which was completed last month at a cost of almost $3 million, replaces the old Haynesville Children’s Home, which was set up for children with physical and mental challenges.

Director of the CCB, Joan Crawford was earlier quoted as saying: "Everything in that Centre is designed to meet the needs of someone who is disabled… Some of the residents have multiple disabilities and delays and the Centre addresses those needs."

The facility contains therapeutic equipment and specially designed beds which were donated by various companies in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
