The Barbados Arts Council’s 2018 Crop Over Art Exhibition got underway on Tuesday evening at the Pelican Craft Village.
Senior Cultural Policy Officer at the Ministry of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, Sheron Johnson, delivering brief remarks on behalf of Minister John King, noted that the exhibition had been a feature of Barbados’ rich cultural landscape for over 20 years, and stands testimony to the mutual commitment of the Ministry and the Barbados Arts Council to the promotion, support and development of the creative sector.
This year’s exhibition comprises approximately fifty works, produced by over 20 artists, using a variety of media including oil, water colour, acrylic, mixed media, printmaking and photography.
“The Ministry of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports is committed to seeing visual arts, and all forms of cultural expression, placed at the forefront of our national development agenda. Our mandate is clear, and it is with this understanding that the various educational and developmental programmes of the National Cultural Foundation and the National Art Gallery are implemented,” said the Senior Cultural Policy Officer.
Reminding those present that the exhibition will run for several weeks, she also urged Barbadians and visitors alike to “come out in their numbers to view, appreciate and purchase these visual reflections of Barbadian culture”.
