The upcoming Mobile Web Application Workshop and Competition, hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and Trade and the University of the West Indies (UWI), was created in an effort to boost Barbados’ competitiveness.
This was disclosed by E-Commerce Development Officer with the Ministry, Chesterfield Coppin, who said that he believed that the effort would illustrate the contribution that technology could make to the island.
"With the increasing use and availability of hand held devices, the increasing need for individuals and online shoppers to have information at their fingertips to make informed decisions and the rapid speed at which various mobile application is growing, the need to have a cadre of individuals to develop mobile apps is necessary in order for Barbados to remain competitive," Mr. Coppin stated.
The workshop will be held from Monday, January 8 to Tuesday, January 9, while the competition will be judged on Monday, January 28, with winners to be awarded Nokia phones from the software corporation, Microsoft.
The activity will be facilitated by personnel from Microsoft, who will assist participants to develop apps in: local and cultural themes/heritage; entertainment in Barbados; games; or sports and media.?? UWI personnel will also assist entrants, who may enter individually, as a duo or trio, to further develop the apps, in preparation for the competition.
