Come Tuesday, June 29, Fisherman’s Day will be observed under the theme: "A Fishing Line keeps us off the Breadline!"
To this end, Weston fisherfolk will stage a week of activities to highlight the importance of fishing to their community, as they seek to provide an alternative and affordable source of protein.
The week will kick off on Sunday, June 27, with a National Fisherfolk Service, at the Garden Church of God, St. James, starting at 8:30 a.m. Acting Minister of Agriculture, George Hutson, will deliver the feature address.
The following day, Monday, June 28, the Weston Resource Centre in St. James, will be the venue for a "Business of Fishing Discussion", which will be facilitated by President of the Weston Fisherfolk Association, Alex Hinds.
On Tuesday, June 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Barbadians are being invited to join Weston fisherfolk at their fish market for a fun-filled Customer Appreciation Day.?? There will be free boat rides, giveaways, dominoes and draughts.
The next event on the agenda will be on Wednesday, June 30, at 7:00 p.m. when a Health and Safety discussion will take place.?? Participating organisations include the Department of Emergency Management, members of the Fire-Service and the Fisheries Division, as they discuss this important topic at the Weston Resource Centre.
Then on Thursday, July 1, Barbadians are being invited to head to the Weston area for what has been dubbed "Q in the Community", featuring karaoke, games and other fun-filled activities. ??The Cancer Society’s Mobile Breast Unit will also be on hand.?? This event will commence at 11:00 a.m.
The main activity of the week will be a Fun Day, on Saturday, July 3, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the market place and Weston Beach.
There will be competitions, a flea market, health stalls, boat racing as well as a string of performances in the evening.
The week will culminate on Sunday, July 4, at 5:00 p.m. with an awards and closing ceremony, at the Weston Resource Centre. Theresa Blackman (TB) – tblackman@barbados.gov.bb
