The new Williams Tower at Warrens, St. Michael, has been described as a ???green??? building designed to assist Barbados in its greening objectives.

These were the sentiments of Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, as he delivered the feature address during the building???s official opening last Friday.

???Wherever possible, the exterior walls are insulated and the amount of glass exposed to direct sunlight has been kept to a minimum to reduce heat from getting into the interior air conditioned space,??? he said.

The Minister also commended the company for its use of photovoltaic panels, which are expected to produce 96,000 kilowatts of electricity annually, and the storing of water from the roof in underground tanks to be used for non-potable use such as toilet flushing, irrigation and car washing.

???There is also a standby diesel generator that is sized to enable all the businesses in the building to continue as normal if and when the main electricity source is not available from the Barbados Light and Power Company Limited,??? Dr. Lowe added.

The new building, constructed at a cost of $23 million, is home to Ace H&B Hardware, Digicel Headquarters, and three offshore banks.
