The willingness on the part of Barbadians to serve their country should be applauded.??

This was emphasised last Friday as the Rotary West 2013/14 Scholarship was awarded to second year student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, Shaneanoh Carter.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry Senator Harry Husbands, in commending Shaneanoh said Barbadian companies or individual citizens who volunteer and assist the young people of this country must be recognised.??

He added that from all reports on students who had received similar scholarships, indications were that they ???have achieved well and are serving Barbados in a very proud way and with a great tradition???.

Attributing some of this to sponsors, Senator Husbands said: ???I think it is important that we honour and congratulate public spirited companies in Barbados, who in these difficult times???still continue to support activities such as this one. And, we cannot in any way minimise the support that we have had from the sponsors.???

To this year???s recipient, Senator Husbands said: ???I am sure that this award will play an extremely significant part in your completion of your studies???. He added that the award had a tradition where persons who received it are ???contributing now to the country in very meaningful ways???.

He continued: ???So you have that responsibility also on your shoulder. But based on all that I have heard I am confident that you will serve your period and complete this scholarship successfully and go on to serve the country in a very meaningful way.???

Director of Youth Service with Rotary West, Winfield King, congratulated Shaneonah and pointed out that the scholarship would do much to ???help her in her ability to educate herself???.

Mr. King noted that Rotary had offered the scholarship for a number of years with the assistance of sponsors, Diamonds International and the Sandy Lane Hotel and that with the thrust towards students paying some of their fees at the university, Rotary could expect to see an increase in the level of scholarships they might be asked to ???put up???. ???So we will be looking at increasing our funding and scholarship levels going forward,??? stressed Mr. King.

In accepting the commendations, Shaneonah acknowledged that she too, would have been among those students who would have been struggling to pay fees at the university this year. As she noted that she was ???fortunate???, Shaneonah thanked the Rotary Club West and its associated sponsors for the award.

The scholarship awardee, who is pursuing a BSc. Degree in Chemistry in the Faculty of Science & Technology at UWI, attended Vauxhall Primary School before going on to The St. Michael School and Harrison College.??Shaneanoh’s long term goals include the pursuit of postgraduate studies in Chemical Engineering or Food Science and to use her training towards the national development of Barbados.

The scholarship is valued at a maximum of BDS $15,000, over the course of study (three to four years). Over the past 12 years the Rotary West Scholarship Programme has facilitated a tertiary education for deserving students and has disbursed a total of over Bds $150,000 in scholarship funds.
