Winners of the Labour Department’s annual HIV and AIDS Poetry Competition have the opportunity to take their pieces to the stage.
Labour Officer and Competition Coordinator, Nia Salankey, revealed that in addition to winners receiving their prizes, "they have the exciting opportunity to perform their pieces at the Love Poetry and Song concert, which is organised by the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS)."
The prize-giving ceremony is slated for Friday, February 17, in the 2nd Floor Conference Room, Warrens Office Complex, at 2:00 p.m. and the first, second and third place winners will be announced at this time.
The Labour Officer explained this was an annual competition held by her department.?? This year, it was held under the theme, It’s Time to Kiss Stigma and Discrimination Goodbye.??
Noting that the competition was part of the Department’s activities for Love Safely Week, she stated that this was the first year participants had the opportunity to "take their pieces to the stage."
Observing that the Labour Department and the BGIS had both chosen to incorporate the art of poetry for Love Safely Week, Ms. Salankey stated that the opportunity to perform at the Love Poetry and Song Concert provided competition participants with further scope to showcase their talents and spread the message.
She added that this year there was an increase in the number of persons entering the competition, which is only open to employees in the public sector, statutory and quasi-governmental organisations.
Love Safely Week starts on Monday, February 13 and concludes on Saturday, February 18.
