Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones (FP)????

Educational institutions lay the foundation for the world of work, but only practical experience in a particular field can ensure that a student is fully competent to do the job.

This observation was made by Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, recently, at The Crane Resort, during a presentation ceremony for interns from the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP).

Mr. Jones noted that there needed to be an "immersion" of students in a particular area of work in order for them to be well prepared for employment. He pointed out: "Schools lay the foundation of knowledge and attitudes; places of work provide the competencies…You take that person who has developed the attitude, some skills, some knowledge and place them into the [workplace] and you will see a totally different person emerging."

In this vein, Minister Jones lauded The Crane Resort for its partnership with the SJPP, which he said provided students with much needed work experience.?? He also commended the hotel’s management for employing five of the 15 persons who interned there, and made the call for other businesses to partner with tertiary institutions in an effort to provide vital practical instruction.????????

The Minister urged the management of the SJPP to continue to set high standards of learning and delivery and to ensure that students there be "good disciples" for the college, so that organisations such as The Crane Development would be eager to employ them and benefit from their contribution.
