Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, greeting World YWCA General Secretary, Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda today at his Ministry; as Permanent Secretary, Sonja Welch; and President of the local YWCA, Marilyn Rice-Bowen look on.

A Government Minister is fully supportive of the work of the YWCA here, especially its Breakfast Programme which provides meals to some students on mornings before school.

??Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, during a courtesy call today with World YWCA General Secretary, Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda (pronounced Nah-rad-zee Gum-bon-zan-da), said he was ???impressed by the tremendous work done by the local YWCA with its Breakfast Club???.

Stating that it was not only the feeding of the children that was important, but the overall role the agency played in communicating with and assisting them with homework and other matters, Minister Sinckler said he had advocated that Government should strongly support the YWCA.

He pointed out that it was important that a symbiotic relationship be developed between the private and public sectors and the YWCA so that assistance in other areas could be channelled towards the children.??

Minister Sinckler also issued an open invitation to the YWCA to partner with them in any activity that would assist them in providing more services to the community.

Ms. Gumbonzvanda, who is on her first visit to Barbados and the Caribbean, stated that she too was encouraged by what she had seen of the Breakfast Programme and the assistance provided by the private sector and Government.?? She remarked that Barbados had ???a model that could be duplicated in other countries???.

Other issues which came up during the talks were domestic violence, a holistic approach to dealing with HIV/AIDS, and young people and their use of modern technology.

Ms. Gumbonzvanda was accompanied by President of the local YWCA, Marilyn Rice-Bowen, and members Katrina Taylor and Jean Cheltenham.

The YWCA was founded in 1855 in Great Britain.?? The movement empowers women and girls to change their world for good in over 22,000 local communities of 122 countries.
