Barbadian exporters will become more familiar with the United States Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and associated proposed regulations with assistance from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the United States Department of Agriculture/Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA/FAS).

The IICA Office in Barbados will be hosting a workshop entitled ???Requirements for Exporting Food to the United States Market – Focus of the Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA)??? next week, July 21-24, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

During the workshop, an instrument designed by IICA to help companies better understand how well they are prepared to comply with the new and proposed export requirements for the US, will be applied to several private businesses.

Visits will be also be made to local companies exporting fresh vegetables and agro-processed food products, in order to determine their level of preparedness to meet the requirements of this Legislation.

Participants from both the public and private sectors are expected to attend the workshop which targets producers and exporters of fresh vegetables, processed foods, sanitary entities, export promotion agencies, accreditation agencies, academia, among others.

Twelve participants from the countries of the Eastern Caribbean will also be in attendance. The workshop follows similar workshops held in Trinidad & Tobago in June and in Peru, Paraguay, Panama and Costa Rica, earlier this year.
