Organisers of this year’s Agrofest will focus their attention on educating farmers by hosting a series of seminars during the inaugural Agrofest Week slated for Sunday, February 8 to Saturday, February 14.

Aimed at tackling critical issues within the agricultural sector, the seminars will be held February 10, 11 and 12 at Grand Barbados, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The topics will include the following: The EPA – Windows of Opportunity or Walls of Threat; The Economic Value of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer, and Pasture Management in the Rearing of Cattle and Sheep.

According to Exhibits Coordinator, Saujean Cutting: “This is the first time that the seminar will be held before Agrofest.  Years ago we attempted to do the seminars during the weekend of the event but it didn’t generate much interest; so we wanted to do it early to get people in an Agrofest mode and to encourage serious discussion.”

Meanwhile, during Agrofest week, there will also be judging of the General Public’s and Schools’ Kitchen Garden and the Milking Cow Competition.  The winners of these contests, along with other competitions that will be judged during the actual days of the Exhibition (Feb 27 to March 1), will be awarded at the official Agrofest Awards Ceremony scheduled for April, 2009.

In addition, several schools with agricultural or environmental programmes will also be visited during the week and will benefit from several incentives for furthering their agricultural programmes.  The schools are: Gordon Greenidge Primary, Bay Primary, St. Paul’s Primary, Charles F. Broome, Roland Edwards Primary, St. Lucy Secondary, St. Leonard’s Boys’ School, The Lodge School and Grantley Adams Memorial.
